How to write a short sentence people remember

You have a few minutes on a single stage. Writing techniques that make a short message readable, clear and memorable.

Readers decide in the first five words

A message on the stage is read or skipped within seconds, so do not hide the important word at the end. Instead of opening with “Today I realised that…”, start with what you realised.

A good short message has one idea. Squeezing two ideas into one sentence weakens both.

Concrete beats abstract

“People should be kinder to each other” is true but forgettable. “I still remember the face of the kid who gave me his seat on the bus” says the same thing with an image. Readers forget advice; they remember scenes.

Use numbers and details — just not enough to identify you.

The cutting exercise

Before you post, ask of every word: would the meaning change without it? “Really”, “actually” and “I think” can usually go. If you can say the same thing in half the length, choose the shorter version.

Another test: read it aloud. If you run out of breath, the sentence is too long.

Question, confession, observation

The messages that get the most interaction tend to be one of three kinds: a question readers answer in their heads, a brave short confession, or an observation everyone has lived but never named. In all three, readers find a piece of themselves in the message.

Know the rules

Messages with profanity, insults, hate speech, threats or someone else’s personal information are rejected before they go live. Writing a sharp criticism that targets the idea rather than the person both follows the rules and persuades better.

FAQ

How long can a Siv be?

280 characters. The posting screen counts down the characters left as you type; staying well under the limit improves your chances of being read.

Should I translate my message into English?

No need. Readers can use the “Translate” button on the card to read it in their own language; writing naturally in yours works better than a translation.

Do emojis help?

One emoji can set the tone, but it cannot replace the message, and its meaning can be lost in translation.
