Digital footprint: why the internet does not forget
A post can outlive its deletion. What a digital footprint is, how to shrink it and what the right to erasure gives you.
Deleting is not disappearing
When you delete a post, the platform’s copy goes away — but screenshots taken in the meantime, search engine caches and archive sites live on separately. Your digital footprint is the sum of all traces online that can be linked to you.
On Sivis a message lives on the stage for minutes, yet everyone can see it while it is there. Whether it leaves a lasting trace depends on nobody copying it.
Active and passive traces
Active traces are what you leave on purpose: posts, comments, profile details. Passive traces build up without you noticing: the pages you visit, your device, your approximate location. Choosing “necessary only” on cookie banners and tightening browser settings reduces passive traces.
Practical ways to shrink it
Review old accounts and close the ones you no longer use. Search your own name; if unexpected results appear, ask those sites to remove them. Using different profile photos and usernames across platforms makes it harder to link your accounts.
The right to erasure
Turkey’s KVKK and the EU’s GDPR give people the right to ask for their data to be deleted. On Sivis you can delete your account and posts, and send requests about your personal data to the contact address in the Privacy Policy. Search engines also accept removal requests for results containing personal information under certain conditions.
Short-lived content is a choice
Sivis messages leave the stage when their time runs out not so that things can be said carelessly, but so they can be said without the pressure of permanence. Still, the best protection is to write things you would stand behind even if they stayed on screen for a minute.
FAQ
Is a faded Siv deleted completely?
A message that leaves the stage goes to the archive and stays on your profile. You can remove it from your profile if you want it gone.
What happens to my posts if I delete my account?
When your account is deleted, your posts and personal data are erased within the periods stated in the Privacy Policy.
How do I remove my name from search results?
First ask the site that published the information to delete it. If the result remains, use the search engine’s personal-information removal form.
